Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (Albert Victor Christian Edward; 8 January 1864 – 14 January 1892) was a member of the British Royal Family, as the eldest son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and Alexandra of Denmark. At the time of his birth, he was second in the line of succession to the throne after his father. However, he predeceased his father, and the crown eventually passed to his younger brother, Prince George (George V), the grandfather of the current British monarch, Elizabeth II. Albert Victor was known to his family as "Eddy", and many later biographers have referred to him by this pet name. The Prince's intellect, sexuality, and sanity have been the subject of much speculation. Some authors have even argued that he was the serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. Documents of the time indicate that Albert Victor could not have been in London at the time of the murders, and historians dismiss the claim. |
